The Tower Run Finishers’ medallions are steeped in history.
Each one is cut from the trunk of a Victorian Stringybark sapling up to 100 years old. These thin sapling trunks were used in the Ovens Valley district, in Markwood near Wangaratta, to kiln-dry tobacco leaves after they were harvested. After the demise of the tobacco industry, these antique poles were left lying in kilns or in open paddocks.
The Upper Beaconsfield Men’s Shed removed mud, bark, spurs and splinters from over a hundred poles before sanding to a fine finish. Many were then polished and finished with Beeswax, and a leather thong attached to become hiking poles. The age, natural seasoning and kiln-drying of the poles have resulted in timber that is extremely strong and hard.
To follow the sustainability theme of the Upper Beaconsfield Festival, this timber was chosen to make the medallions. A metal branding iron was made with the Festival logo so that the timber could be imprinted without using paint. The ribbon also needed to be sustainable, and therefore is made from 100% Australian cotton.
The Tower Run Winners’ trophies are similarly sourced from sustainable materials, in this instance from reclaimed timber. The twelve Open winner trophies are made from blackwood, the eight Junior trophies from pine, and the ‘Best Motorbike’ trophy from plywood.
The timber was cut & formed to equal sizes, and engraved using a computer-controlled router, which also allowed the wording to be individualised for each trophy. The engraving was then filled with a black resin, and finished by sanding and treating with a clear sealant.
